Chapter 11
Hunter
It was almost eleven when I made it back to Davidâs parentsâ place. I briefly entertained the idea of crashing at Mom and Dadâs, then meeting up with him in the morning, but I was itching to see him. And who was I kiddingâI didnât want to sleep alone.
So I texted him to see if he was still awake, and he said heâd let me in through the side door.
I turned down the Colemansâs long driveway, cut my lights, and carefully followed the moonlit snow-lined gravel up to the house. Everything was dark, so I shut the car door as quietly as I could, hoping not to wake anyone. Good thing they didnât have a dog, or thereâd probably be barking by now.
Then, using my cell phone as a flashlight, I walked around to the side door. I was just coming up the path when the door opened.
âHey,â David whispered, the moonlight just catching his smile.
Oh God, itâs good to see you.
âHey.â I slipped inside, and as he carefully shut the door behind me, I toed off my shoes. âSorry I got in so late.â
âDonât worry about it. How was the visit?â
I groaned.
He chuckled. âThat good?â
âUh-huh.â
We crept down the hall to the guest room, and David closed the door behind us with an almost soundless click. Then he turned on the light, and we both flinched until our eyes adjusted.
Heâd already changed into a pair of low-slung sweats, and I pointedly did not stare at him because oh, the last thing I needed was to be ogling him right before we got into bed together. So I busied myself taking out my contacts, brushing my teeth, and changing into a pair of gym shorts. By the time I came out of the bathroom, heâd already climbed into bed.
I shut off the light and joined him, resting my head on his chest. Jesus. I was amazed I didnât fall asleep right then and there. Relaxing in bed, Davidâs arm around my shoulders, the peaceful night after a chaotic dayâthat was exactly what the doctor had ordered. Especially the hypnotic way he stroked my hair.
Just keep doing that until the sun comes up.
After a while, he asked, âSo really, how was visiting the red side of the family?â
I swore, rubbing my eyes with my thumb and forefinger. âIt⦠I mean, it couldâve been a lot worse.â I rested my hand in the middle of his chest and sighed. âBut Christ, it couldâve been so much better too. I swear, it was a relief when my aunt and cousin got into a rip-roaring screaming match about whether the US shouldâve been in Iraq in the first place.â
âYeah?â
âYeah. Because that got everyone off my back for a while.â I paused. âI mean, they werenât really on my back. They just wanted to hear all about my time in the desert, andâ¦â I shuddered. âI kept trying to divert the conversation and talk about when I was at sea, but man, it always went back to war stories.
